This page is about the monsters in Rune Factory 2: A Fantasy Harvest Moon.

Outside of Alvarna, the protagonist may encounter various monsters. They may drop crafting items when destroyed, and can be tamed as battle companions and farm helpers.

Origin[]

Monsters appear in areas outside of Alvarna via gates from the Forest of Beginnings. When defeated, monsters return to the Forest of Beginnings, even if their Gate was destroyed. Nobody knows how the Gates are formed. According to Barrett, the Sechs empire is able to move gates around with vehicles, controlling where monsters will spawn. But it's likely even their mages don't understand how to create them.

There is great variety among monsters. Different monsters appear at night (after 6:00 PM). Some are able to cast spells, others can teleport, and various enemies have attacks that can push or stun the protagonist. Some monsters such as the Buffamoo are simple animals, but others have personality and culture, such as the Orcs, Goblins, and Mages.

Monster Taming[]

To befriend a monster, Kyle will need a Pet Glove from Cecilia. It can be obtained by completing her first request. After this, he can get permission from Mayor Byron to build a barn. The barn will cost 5,000 G and 100 Wood pieces and start with 4 floors, each floor can hold 4 monsters. It only takes one day to build. When Kyle enters the barn for the first time, Mana gives Kyle the Special Concerto.

Now that they have a place to go, the protagonist can use the Pet Glove to tame monsters from the dungeons. However, the monster will continue attacking while it's being petted, so a good defense score is essential. A successful pet is indicated by hearts above the monster's head. How many pets depends on the protagonist's Communication skill. When a monster is successfully tamed, a menu will appear to give it a name. After being named, the monster travels to the Barn via the Forest of Beginnings, assuming there is space free for it.

Fighting Companions[]

All tame monsters can accompany the protagonist into battle. To ask a monster to come along, talk to it and select "Take [NAME] with you." Monsters retain all their attack moves from when they were wild, and will automatically attack any other monsters or gates they can see.

The protagonist can make their tame monsters stronger than the wild stock, however. By petting tame monsters every day with the Brush, their HP will increase. HP increases at FP 4, and again at FP 8. The individual HP thresholds vary by monster. Whether a monster is fed or not doesn't affect its FP.

Rideable[]

Some monsters can serve as mounts. Riding a monster is much faster than running. Monsters who can serve as mounts display an option "Get on its back" when talked to outside the barn.

Farm Work[]

Monsters can help with farm work, but they will not work if they are not fed. Feeding happens automatically if there is enough Monster Food in storage. Monster Feed is automatically transferred to the Barn's storage when fully grown Grass is harvested with the Scythe.

Some tame monsters can be assigned to work on the farm. Only certain monsters can perform these duties. To assign a monster to work, talk to it. If the monster can work, the option appears to take it on or off of duty. Talking to a monster while it's working in the field also gives this option.

Monsters that work in the field begin at the top-left (Northwest) corner and move across toward the right, then they descend a row and cross again to the left. They zig-zag like this until the whole field is covered. They continue working even if the protagonist leaves the farm or goes to sleep.

The only purpose of the color code is for the map below. It represents the farthest tile, starting from the 1st tile, that a watering/harvesting monster work on based on their Friendship Level.

Monster Products[]

Some monsters produce items. Each type of item needs a specific tool to harvest it. The sign outside the barn will indicate if a creature is ready to harvest from or not, and which is needed to collect the product.

Except for Honey, which has only one size, monster products increase in size and quality with the monster's FP level. At 1-3, the size is Small. From 4-7, Medium, and 8-10 produces Large items.
